USS Somerset Supports 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit Exchange with Sri Lanka Marines

SECNAV Visits USS Makin Island, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit Sailors, Marines

Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), the Honorable Ray Mabus, right, and USS Makin Island (LHD 8) Commanding Officer Capt. Mark A. Melson observe Makin Island’s Strait of Malacca transit from the bridge after the ship’s departure from Changi Naval Base, Singapore.  Mabus was aboard Makin Island as part of a visit to the Pacific and Central Command areas of responsibility to meet with Sailors, Marines, and military and government officials. Makin Island, the flagship of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

U.S., China Participate in Disaster Management Exchange

As part of the U.S.-China Disaster Management Exchange, Maj. Gen. Gregory Bilton, the deputy commanding general for the U.S. Army Pacific, visited the Dianchi Lake November 14 in Kunming, China. Bilton's visit allowed members of the People Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China the opportunity to display customs and traditions of their culture during the U.S.-China DME. The annual United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) Security Cooperation event with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is an opportunity to share Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief lessons learned from real world events and enhance U.S. and Chinese disaster management capabilities.

USS John C. Stennis to Support 75th Anniversary of Attack on Pearl Harbor

Twenty-six nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 30 to Aug. 4, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971.

Marines Demonstrate Osprey Capabilities to Sasebo Community

Conquering Fears; a Foundation for Water Survival

More 42 Soldiers assigned to A Co. 225th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, and three Marines Water Survival Instructors, assigned to 3rd Marines Corps Regiment, took part in a water survival class Nov. 16, 2016, at Richardson Pool on Schofield Barracks. The training was designed to provide Soldiers with water survival techniques to overcome any open water fear.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 Cale went on to spend the remainder of World War II with the 1st Marine Division at Guadalcanal and in 1948 he transferred to the U.S. Army. The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem (DDG 63) returns to Fleet Activities (FLEACT) Yokosuka following its 2016 patrol, Nov. 17. Stethem made a brief stop at FLEACT Sasebo to pick up family members for a Tiger Cruise. FLEACT Yokosuka provides, maintains, and operates base facilities and services in support of 7th Fleet’s forward-deployed naval forces, 83 tenant commands, and 24,000 military and civilian personnel.
