USS Somerset Arrives in Singapore

Line handlers assigned to Naval Station San Diego wait to release the mooring lines of the amphibious transport dock ship USS Somerset (LPD 25), as it prepares to depart for a scheduled deployment. Somerset is a part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, which will serve in the U.S. 3rd, 5th, and 7th Fleet area of operation, providing maritime security operations, crisis response capability, theater security cooperation and forward naval presence.

Sampson will report to U.S. Third Fleet, Headquartered in San Diego, while deployed to the Western Pacific as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of Third Fleet into the region.

Ronald Reagan is participating in Exercise KS17, a joint, bilateral field-training exercise involving U.S. military and Japan Self-Defense Force personnel designed to increase the combat readiness and interoperability of the Japan-U.S. alliance.

This ceremony is a continuation of the long tradition established in 1912, when Japan donated 3,000 cherry blossom trees to the U.S. These trees are planted along the Potomac River in Washington D.C. and the U.S. reciprocated with dogwood trees in 1915.
