HONG KONG -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Sterett (DDG 104) arrived in Hong Kong for a port visit March 27 after a stretch of operations as part of a deployment in the Indo-Pacific.

The visit is meant to allow the crew to experience the culture of Hong Kong, engage with the local community, and continue to build a strong relationship with the counterparts in Hong Kong’s disciplined services.

"We are thankful for the opportunity to visit Hong Kong. The crew is excited to learn about its history and experience the energy of this great city." Said Cmdr. Claudine Caluori, Sterett's commanding officer. "Visits like these are important because it provides us the opportunity to extend the good will of the United States throughout the Indo-Pacific region."

Of the range of activities planned, Sterett will visit a nursery school and a secondary school, participating in cultural activities and sports games with students.

"I am very excited for our Sailors to participate in these community outreach events in Hong Kong,” said Lt. Cmdr. James Ragain, Destroyer Squadron One chaplain. “Not only do they have the great privilege to represent the United States and the Navy, but serving others is a great way for these men and women to grow personally and professionally."

Many Sterett Sailors are looking forward to trying the local cuisine and understand the rich history of Hong Kong.

“I’m thrilled to hit port after all this time at sea,” said Yeoman 3rd Class Quinton Foreman, from Dallas. “I’ve been to Hong Kong before so I already know what I’m going to do. I’m planning on doing some hiking, eating some authentic Chinese food, and maybe I’ll see the Buddha statue at Po Lin monastery.”

Comprised of approximately 300 Sailors, Sterett is a multi-mission ship with weapons and sensors that allow it to operate across all warfare domains. Sterett’s capabilities are designed to allow it to operate independently or in tandem with other ships.

The San Diego-based Sterett is currently deployed to the Indo-Pacific region in support of the Wasp Expeditionary Strike Group and its patrol with the 31st Expeditionary Unit.

Sterett last deployed with USS Dewey (DDG 105) in 2017 and operated with regional navies to conduct routine patrols, maritime security operations, and theater security cooperation activities to enhance regional security and stability.

The presence of ships like Sterett in the Indo-Pacific help preserve peace and security and further ties with partners and allies.
