HALAWA, Hawaii - Brig. Gen. Michelle Link, Deputy Commander, Joint Task Force-Red Hill (JTF-RH), discusses defueling operations with Vice Adm. Scott Gray, Commander, Navy Installations Command, during a visit to the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility (RHBFSF), Halawa, Hawaii, Feb. 6, 2024. During the visit, the combined JTF-RH/ Navy Closure Task Force-Red Hill (NCTF-RH) team shared details about the 2021 fuel spills at the RHBFSF and their missions to safely and expeditiously defuel and execute the permanent closure of the facility and continue long term remediation of the site. JTF-RH completed gravity defueling Dec. 15, 2023, removing over 104.6 million gallons of fuel from the RHBFSF tanks, and as of Feb. 5, 2024, removed over 25,000 gallons of an estimated 64,000 total gallons of residual fuel from the RHBFSF pipelines. JTF-RH continues transition with NCTF-RH, which is expected to be complete by the end of March 2024. Following transition, NCTF-RH will remove the remaining residual fuel, execute closure of the facility and conduct long-term environmental remedition (DoD photo by U.S. Army ZaBarr Jones)
