The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Juniper crew provided assistance to Kiritimati Island, Kiribati, by off-loading potable water and supplies following their extreme drought, July 19, 2022. In a unified effort with the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, the U.S. Coast Guard provided much needed assistance by supplying over 4,000 gallons of safe drinking water, 200 buckets with lids, 600 10-liter water containers, and two 10,000-liter water bladders.

Nineteen patients from American Samoa requiring non-COVID-19 related medical care and 13 escorts arrived June 9 at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii on a U.S. Navy C-40 flight as part of a Federal Emergency Management Agency support mission. Military air was the only option for transporting passengers due to the suspension of commercial passenger flights to American Samoa from March 26 until June 30, 2020. At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. military, under its Defense Support of Civil Authorities mission set, enabled this group of medical patients to finally access the health care that they needed. This is in keeping with the DSCA tenets of saving lives and mitigating human suffering during declared emergencies.

Four rescued mariners from the sailing vessel SS Chuckahui Kai arrive at Coast Guard Base Honolulu, June 9, 2020. The mariners became lost after their GPS malfunctioned and were found by an Air Station Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules aircrew 75-miles south of Oahu.

The Coast Guard's 14th District has followed other districts in implementing the groundbreaking i911 technology to assist mariners in distress on the waters throughout the Pacific. The Coast Guard ran a pilot program from May to November 2019 in the Northeast, and the new application was instrumental in resolving several search and rescue cases in the New England region. It is now an available tool to Coast Guard command centers across the country as of March 20.
