Strong alliances, Soldier readiness key to deterring aggression in the Pacific
Lt. Gen. Bill Burleson, Eighth Army commanding general, led a panel discussing "Deterring Aggression through Joint and Coalition Readiness" at #LANPAC2022 in Hawaii May 18. He was joined by 2nd Infantry Division's Col. W.M. Bochat, 2ID chief of staff, along with other panelists. The Land Forces Pacific Symposium and Exposition is sponsored by the Association of the United States Army and ran May 17-19, 2022.

168th Wing Refuels Red Flag
Senior Airman David Thurman crew chief assigned to the 168th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Alaska Air National Guard, conducts routine maintenance checks while communicating with the KC-135 aircrew before sending off in support of Red Flag-Alaska 22-1 at Eielson Air Force Base. The Alaska Air National Guard, 168th Wing, leads and generates combat readiness training as the tanker task force refueling Red Flag-Alaska 22-1, providing combat interoperability opportunities to approximately 2,200 service members from three nations, maintaining and supporting more than 90 aircraft and over 25 units. Airmen of the 168th Wing provide critical support to allies through on-time rapid in-flight refueling allowing RF-A participants to train for full spectrum engagements. RF-A is a Pacific Air Forces-directed training exercise allowing forces unique opportunities to integrate into joint and multilateral training.

JGSDF and U.S. military leaders meet in Hawaii
From left, Gen. Yoshida Yoshihide, chief of staff, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and Lt. Gen. Steven R. Rudder, commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, participate in a one-on-one working breakfast at Camp H.M. Smith. Both Gen. Yoshida and Lt. Gen. Rudder were participating in the 41st bilateral meeting of the annual Senior Leader’s Seminar, Fort Shafter, Hawaii, March 31st and April 1st. Each year, the U.S. Marines and Japan Self-Defense Force conduct ten bilateral exercises and participate together in numerous smaller unit-level engagements both bilaterally and with additional allies and partners throughout the region.

B-2 conducts mission in Indo-Pacific, integrates with US, Royal Australian Air Force fighters
A U.S. Air force B-2 Spirit from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, flies in formation with two Australian Air Force F-35A Lightening IIs, two RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornets, two RAAF EA-18 Growlers, and two U.S. Air Force F-16C Aggressors from Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska during a training mission in the Indo-Pacific Mission, March 23, 2022. Once in Australian airspace, the B-2 crews from the 509th Bomb Wing teams up with a KC-135 Stratotanker from the Alaska Air National Guard to complete aerial refueling before integrating with the eight-fighter aircraft.

PACAF engages with Graduate students for Security Studies Program

Students visited JBPHH as part of a tour of military commands on the island of Oahu to learn about the Department of Defense’s role in ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific. Participants in the program included Graduate and Doctorate-level students as well as five Active Duty military members from across the services, as part of their Senior Development Education requirements. The program emphasizes grand strategy, the causes and prevention of conflict, military operations and technology and defense policy.

ABECSG’s Air Wing of the Future Strengthens Joint Force during Indo-Pacific Exercise
Marines of Marine Wing Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 314 launch from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) as they provided simulated defense carrier air support for long-range maritime strikes throughout the day and night during amphibious operations in support of Noble Fusion. Noble Fusion highlights that Navy and Marine Corps forward-deployed stand-in naval expeditionary forces can rapidly aggregate Marine Expeditionary Unit/Amphibious Ready Group teams at sea, along with a carrier strike group, as well as other joint force elements and allies, in order to conduct lethal sea-denial training, seize key maritime terrain, guarantee freedom of movement, and create advantage for US, partner and allied forces. Naval Expeditionary forces conduct training throughout the year, in the Indo-Pacific, to maintain readiness.

JMSDF, U.S. Navy conduct bilateral operations in South China Sea
In this file, U.K. Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08), U.S. Navy Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Izumo-class helicopter destroyer JS Kaga (DDH 184) sail together as part of Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) 2021, Oct. 17, 2021. MPX 2021 is a multilateral maritime exercise between the Royal Australian Navy, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, U.K. Royal Navy and U.S. maritime forces, focused on naval cooperation, interoperability and regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific and is an example of the enduring partnership between Australian, Japanese, U.K. and U.S. maritime forces who, who routinely operate together in the Indo-Pacific, fostering a cooperative approach toward regional security and stability.

Multiple allied carrier strike groups operate together in 7th Fleet
The United Kingdom’s carrier strike group led by HMS Queen Elizabeth (R 08), and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces led by Hyuga-class helicopter destroyer JS Ise (DDH 182) join with U.S. Navy carrier strike groups led by flagships USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) to conduct multiple carrier strike group operations in the Philippine Sea. The integrated at-sea operations brought together more than 15,000 Sailors across six nations, and demonstrates the U.S. Navy’s ability to work closely with its unmatched network of alliances and partnerships in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
