The purpose of bilateral training is to foster increased interoperability between Japan and U.S. aircraft. Participating in bilateral training enables the operational units to improve their combined capabilities and tactical skills, while also building bilateral confidence and strong working relationships.

PACAF consolidates Silver Flag training at Andersen

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Robert Mcintosh, 8th Civil Engineering Squadron pavement and construction journeyman, pushes gravel into a crater using a loader June 23, 2017, Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea. The 8th Civil Engineering Squadron participated in airfield damage repair training as part of the final Exercise Silver Flag training held at Kunsan. U.S. Air Forces Pacific will now focus on ensuring Airmen have their three-year Silver Flag currency, prior to arriving on the Korean Peninsula, instead of conducting the training here.

A U.S. Airman from the 9th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron descends from a U.S. Navy MH-60 Seahawk, assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Two-Five, during a combat search and rescue training exercise June 5, 2017, at Andersen South, Guam. Service members from Task Force Talon, HSC-25, and the 36th Wing joined together to practice survival, evasion, resistance and escape procedures, emergency evacuation techniques and quick reaction force training. This is the first time these units participated in a combat search and rescue exercise together on Guam.

Rubble on the runway

Japanese contractors conduct routine maintenance on the airfield at Misawa Air Base, Japan, May 18, 2017. The runway become fully operational June 26, more than a week ahead of schedule. This gave the 13th and 14th Fighter Squadrons along with 35th Maintenance Group personnel the opportunity to relocate and train with other Pacific Air Forces squadrons and integrate the 35th Fighter Wing mission in various locations.
