Alaska Air National Guard unveils new tail flash on Stratotanker aircraft at Eielson AFB
A KC-135 Stratotanker from the Alaska Air National Guard’s 168th Wing was unveiled showcasing a new tail flash on the wing’s aircraft, Oct. 15, 2020. A polar bear stands strong on the wing’s tail flash representing the arctic region and spirit of Alaska. The geometric design of the polar bear highlights the wing’s culture of innovation. The 168th Wing continues to have strong ties to local communities in interior Alaska as the “hometown Air Force.” In collaboration with Tanana Chiefs Conference, the 168th Wing honors interior communities on the wing’s aircraft. The first KC-135 revealed honors Minto and is one of nine total aircraft representing Alaska interior communities. The next aircraft to be unveiled will honor Gwichyaa Zhee, Grayling, Huslia, Tetlin, Telida, and Tanana. Additionally, Fairbanks and North Pole will be displayed on the final two aircraft.

Alaska Guard’s 207th Aviation Regiment
Alaska Army National Guardsman Col. Robert Kurtz recently stepped down as the State Aviation Officer for 1st Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment upon retirement Sept. 30, 2020 at the Bryant Army Airfield. Kurtz flew into the ceremony aboard a UH-72 Lakota helicopter and was welcomed with a water cannon salute, the first time an AKNG Lakota has been used for the aviation tradition. He served the Alaska Army National Guard for five years, and was responsible for transforming the unit during an important transitionary period for Army aviators across the nation. He was awarded the federal and state Legion of Merit medals,, along with the coveted Master Aviator Badge, which requires at least 2,000 flight hours and 15 years of experience.

Paratroopers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, “Spartan Brigade,” execute a joint forcible entry operation into Donnelly Training Area, Alaska, Sept. 14, 2020. More than 250 Paratroopers participated as part of a U.S. Army Pacific exercise that included the movement of an M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System from the 17th Fires Brigade based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord to Shemya Island, along with air support from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson F-22 fighter jets. The exercise demonstrated the capability of U.S. military forces in the Pacific theater to work together across vast distances to project force as needed to bolster safety and stability in the region.

B-1s Train with JASDF, return to Andersen Air Force Base for BTF deployment
U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons assigned to the 18th Aggressor Squadron, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, sit on the flightline in support of Valiant Shield 2020 at Andersen AFB, Guam, Sept. 11, 2020. Valiant Shield is a U.S. only, biennial field training exercise (FTX) with a focus on integration of joint training in a blue-water environment among U.S. forces. This training enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking, and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land, and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.

NWTC cadre followed Coronavirus restrictions while guiding students through both the basic and advanced mountaineering courses in August. With the advent of Alaska’s long, cold winter, NWTC’s focus is now shifting to cold weather training for the 2020-21 season.
