The 18th Wing conducts a change of command ceremony July 8, 2019, at Kadena Air Base, Japan. The mission of the 18th Wing is to deliver unmatched combat airpower and a forward-staging base to provide sovereign options that promote peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. Its current fleet of aircraft represents a broad spectrum of combat capability and is now commanded by Brig. Gen. Joel Carey.

35th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
The U.S. Air Force 610th Air Control Flight pauses for a group photo at Misawa Air Base, Japan, July 31, 2019. The 610th ACF won two Headquarters Air Force-level awards in 2018 including the “Outstanding Ground-Based Battle Management Command and Control Crew.” Its mission ensured airspace safety for F-16 Fighting Falcon sorties by de-conflicting with multiple aircraft and providing pilots real-time feedback.

Air Defense Female Command Team Inspires Future Leaders
Lt. Col. Rosanna M. Clemente, commander, 1st Battalion, 1st Air Defense Artillery, and Command Sgt. Maj. Melissa Calvo, 1-1 ADA senior enlisted advisor, attend the 15th Antiaircraft Artillery Regiment, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force 5th Anniversary celebration at Camp Yaese June 29. The 15th AAR held an equipment display and demonstration followed by a reception hosting Soldiers, Marines, JGSDF members and Defense Association members. Clemente and Calvo represent the first female command team in Air Defense and continue to spearhead the defense of Japan in the Pacific Theater of operation while inspiring their Soldiers.

U.S., Indonesian Air Forces Wrap Up Cope West 19
U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Ryan Okahara, the Hawaii Air National Guard commander and Indonesia Air Force Air First Marshal Widyargo Ikoputra, the Iswahjudi Air Force Base commander, receives a brief from F-16 Fighting Falcon pilots from both nations prior to the Cope West 19 closing ceremony at Sam Ratulangi International Airport, Manado, Indonesia, June 28. Over the course of the two-week exercise, the two services flew a combined total of 130 sorties, affording both countries the opportunity to exchange knowledge and tactical consideration in modern air combat warfare during close air support training and air-to-air fighter training. U.S. Navy, JMSDF EOD Technicians Strengthen Ties during Mine Exercise
Explosive ordnance disposal technicians assigned to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the U.S. Navy participate in a live bottom mine contact charge demonstration during IWOTO 2019. IWOTO 2019 is one of the largest live mine countermeasures exercises conducted in the entire world, providing personnel with the opportunity to conduct contact charges and FMRs against real mines without sensor packages.

35th Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen Ensure F-16 Pilots Safety
A U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon from the 14 Fighter Squadron, Misawa Air Base, Japan, pulls the mobile aircraft arresting system (MAAS) cable at the Sam Ratulangi International Airport, Manado, Indonesia, June 17, 2019. The MAAS is a contingency airfield asset that allows for the safe retrieval of tail hook aircraft during an in-flight emergency. History in the making: “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band Visits Japan for First Time
"The President’s Own” United States Marine Band performs at the Yamaguchi Prefectural Culture Hall Sinfonia Iwakuni in Iwakuni City, Japan, May 19, 2019. Nearly 1,200 Japanese locals and Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni residents attended the concert. The centuries-old musical group rarely travels outside of the United States and has never before visited Japan. The last time the band performed internationally was 2001 in Switzerland, making this trip truly historic and unique.
