U.S. Paratroopers with 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade, 11th Airborne Division participate in a shooting competition held between squads from their battalion and squads of Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) members with 28th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade, Northern Army during North Wind 24, Jan. 26, 2024 on JGSDF Hokudai-en Training Area in Chitose, Hokkaido. The shooting competition had each squad run 100 meters, reload their weapons, and fire at two targets on a silhouette, with squad members that didn’t hit both targets each round being disqualified; the side with the most squad members left at the end wins. North Wind is a bilateral cold-weather field training exercise held between the U.S. Army and JGSDF where the allies exchange tactics and techniques; this year’s exercise is the 31st North Wind.
