Marine Osprey refueled by Japanese Defense Force

Andrew Sturgress, a MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft crew chief assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 262, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, walks past Mr. Norio Tomonaga, the Mayor of Sasebo, and the Assemblymen of Defense for Sasebo City during take-off preparation from Sasebo, Nagasaki, Japan, Nov. 18, 2016. The aircraft flew from the island of Okinawa, conducted simulated humanitarian aid with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) at multiple locations and was refueled by JMSDF personnel before returning to Okinawa. Sturgess is a native of Sidney, Illinois.

Marines land in Apra Harbor to offload tanks, equipment

SANTA RITA, Guam -- Marine Corps tanks, Amphibious Assault Vehicles and other rolling stock aligned on Tango Pier, U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG), Oct. 28 await to be backloaded onto the maritime prepositioning ship USNS PFC Dewayne T. Williams (T-AK-3009). The more than 80 pieces of rolling stock and equipment offloaded in the port of Apra Harbor represented a rare three-week maintenance opportunity where the use of NBG’s reinforced piers for amphibious and tracked vehicles was more than a proof of concept, but also an exercised capability for the port at Apra Harbor far west of a typical port of call, such as Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Innovations Save Lives

Cpl. Matthew A. Long turns a wrench on a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) engine on Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan, October 25, 2016. Long was selected as a winner in a Marine Corps logistical innovation competition for incorporating a blood clotting agent and pain killer with a Small Arms Protective Insert (SAPI) to minimize the time between injury and aid. Exercise Lava Viper: Direct fire training

POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, Hawaii – Marines with Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment’s “Black Sheep,” fire an M777 Lightweight Towed Howitzer during a direct fire training exercise as part of Lava Viper 17.1, a staple in the battalion’s pre-deployment training on Oct. 16, 2016, at Range 13 aboard Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii. Lava Viper Provides the Hawaii-based Marines with an opportunity to conduct various movements, live-fire and tactical, integrating combined arms exercises.

CJCS Hosts ROK Counterpart for 41st ROK-MCM

From classroom to field ops, Marines train to be squad leaders

Marines don their gas masks as simulated hostiles use O-chlorobenzalmalononitrile gas (CS gas) during a raid as part of a training exercise aboard the Kahuku Training Facility, Sept. 20, 2016. The exercise is part of a 7-week-long training known as the Advance Infantry Course. The Advance Infantry Course, which is conducted by the Advance Infantry Battalion, Detachment Hawaii, is an advanced 0311 (Rifleman) Military Occupational Specialty course for squad leaders who are currently serving in the operating field. Originally only for 3rd Marine Division, the course here has opened up to various infantry units throughout the Marine Corps. Marines start with a week of proofing their prerequisites that are required for the course, confirming their basic skill sets, and then spend two weeks in a garrison environment doing course work and physical training routines geared toward the squad leader. Towards the second half of the course, Marines conduct one live fire week, followed by three consecutive weeks in the field, progressing from an urban exercise to a patrolling exercise, with offensive and defensive tactics. Marines trained in multiple areas on the island, from high in the mountains of the Kahuku Training Facility to the Military Operation in Urban Terrain facilities on Marine Corps Training Area Bellows.
