F-35B arrives in Japan

An F-35B Lightning II with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, lands at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Jan. 18, 2017. VMFA-121 conducted a permanent change of station to MCAS Iwakuni, from MCAS Yuma, Ariz., and now belongs to Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. The F-35B Lightning II is a fifth-generation fighter, which is the world's first operational supersonic short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft. The F-35B brings strategic agility, operational flexibility and tactical supremacy to III MEF with a mission radius greater than that of the F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8B Harrier II in support of the U.S. - Japan alliance.

VMFA-121 departs for relocation to Japan

Marine Corps F-35Bs from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, transit the Pacific from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Ariz., to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Jan. 9, 2017, with its final destination of Iwakuni, Japan. VMFA-121 is the first operational F-35B squadron assigned to the Fleet Marine Force, with its relocation to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing at Iwakuni. The F-35B was developed to replace the Marine Corps’ F/A-18 Hornet, AV-8B Harrier and EA- 6B Prowler. The Short Take-off Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft is a true force multiplier. The unique combination of stealth, cutting-edge radar and sensor technology, and electronic warfare systems bring all of the access and lethality capabilities of a fifth-generation fighter, a modern bomber, and an adverse-weather, all-threat environment air support platform.

Joint operations seize the day

U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265, Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Japan, fly in formation with a U.S. Air Force MC-130J Commando II assigned to the 17th Special Operations Squadron, Kadena Air Base, Japan, during a tiltrotor air to air refueling (TAAR) July 19, 2016, over the Pacific Ocean. The TAAR enabled the Ospreys to operate beyond unassisted flight range in a training exercise designed to evaluate long-range airfield seizure capability in a joint operation between the Marines and Air Force.

The supplies are in support of the relief effort after a series of earthquakes struck the island of Kyushu. The 31st MEU is the only continually forward-deployed MEU and remains the Marine Corps' force-in-readiness in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

Japanese and U.S. Sailors Load Supplies For Earthquake Relief Efforts

ISLAND OF KYUSHU, Japan (April 19, 2016) - Japan Maritime Self Defense Force Sailors and U.S. Navy Sailors load supplies aboard an MV-22B Osprey with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 265 (Reinforced), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, aboard the JS Hyuga off the coast of the Island of Kyushu. Marines, Japanese soldiers bridge gaps while training

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Oct. 2, 2015) - Marines and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) soldiers take a stance after a simulated riot control situation during Exercise Guard and Protect. Marines and JGSDF soldiers were challenged with real world situations such as riot control, armed intruder response and vehicle searches to prepare in case the air station has to take a defense posture.
