COL Joseph C. Scott serves as Deputy Director, J8 (Resources and Requirements) for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. He grew up an Air Force “brat,” but currently hails from Hanover, New Hampshire. He was commissioned through ROTC as an Air Defense Artillery (ADA) officer in 2000.
COL Scott’s first assignment was as a Patriot Platoon Leader and Tactical Control Officer in E Battery, 2nd Battalion, 43rd ADA at Fort Bliss, Texas and in Kuwait and Iraq during the opening months of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. While at Fort Bliss, he also served as a Patriot Battalion Tactical Director (2 -43 ADA), Patriot Officer Basic Course Mentor/Instructor (3rd Battalion, 6th ADA), and brigade assistant S-3 (108th ADA Brigade). He then commanded B Battery, 1st Battalion, 7th ADA, at Fort Bliss and at Osan Air Base in the Republic of Korea.
Following two years of advanced civilian school, Joe served as a military history instructor and Assistant Professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He later served as the Senior Air and Missile Defense Operations Officer for XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and deployed to Afghanistan to serve as the Visitor Coordination Cell Chief for the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (IJC). Following redeployment, Joe served as the S-3, XO, and Rear Detachment Battalion Commander for Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps. He then served as Deputy Commanding Officer for 31st ADA Brigade at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and later as Battalion Commander of the 3rd Battalion, 6th ADA Regiment in the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School (the battalion was split between Fort Sill, Oklahoma and White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico). Following command, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff, G3 (Operations) and then Chief of Staff for the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command (AAMDC) at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawai'i.
COL Scott has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Dartmouth College, a Masters of Arts in History from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Strategic Studies (Distinguished Graduate) from the U.S. Army War College. His military education includes the ADA Officer Basic Course, the ADA Captains’ Career Course, the Joint Firepower Course, Command and General Staff College, the Air Command and Staff College, and the Jumpmaster Course. His U.S. awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. His international awards include the NATO ISAF Medal, the Republic of Georgia’s General Kvinitadze Medal, and German Airborne Wings (Bronze)
