HONIARA GUADALCANAL IS, Solomon Islands - Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency recovery team members and local Solomon Islanders work together to screen dirt from an excavation site during a recovery mission in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, July 23, 2024. This mission was the first time the screening station and excavation site were geographically separated, requiring trucks to transport the dirt. There are approximately 72,000 U.S. personnel unaccounted for from World War II. Of those, 374 are unaccounted for within the island of Guadalcanal. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt.
