Came to Train, Stayed to Help: 3rd MAW Marines Assist in Typhoon Recovery Efforts
U.S. Marines with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 16 from Miramar, Calif., move a tree blocking the road on Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz, Guam, June 2, 2023. A Combined Joint Task Force led by U.S. Army Pacific and Task Force West are the DOD representatives supporting FEMA and the governments of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as we continue recovery efforts in the wake of Typhoon Mawar. Commander Task Force West Rear Adm. Benjamin Nicholson, and all military installation commanding officers in Guam are diligently working to restore steady state to the bases, and dedicate resources to all FEMA mission assignments. Typhoon Mawar moved through the area as a Category 4 storm on May 24, bringing hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and high seas marking the strongest storm to affect the island since Typhoon Pongsona in 2002. Sea Dragon anti-submarine warfare (ASW) competition participants pose for a group photo after the “Dragon Belt” was awarded to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) for earning the highest average score all given ASW criteria, March 23. Participating nations include Royal Canadian Air Force, Indian Navy, JMSDF, Republic of Korea Navy, and the United States. Sea Dragon is a U.S.-led, multinational exercise designed to practice and discuss anti-submarine warfare tactics to operate together in response to traditional and non-traditional maritime security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.

Guam 37th Legislature visits Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz
U.S. Marine Corps Col. Christopher Bopp, commanding officer Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Blaz, provides a command brief to members and staff of the Guam 37th Legislature before a tour of MCB Camp Blaz facilities on Guam, March 17, 2023. MCB Camp Blaz coordinated with the Chairman for the Committee on the Guam Buildup, Senator Roy Quinata and his staff to invite all members of the Guam Legislature on a base tour to learn more about the Marine Corps' construction progress and to showcase the ongoing efforts to avoid, minimize, and offset the impact to Guam’s natural and cultural resources. In attendance were Sen. Roy Quinata, Sen. Jesse Lujan, and Sen. Joanne Brown. Staff members from the offices of Sen. Thomas Fisher and Sen. Amanda Shelton as well as the Executive Director of the Community Defense Liaison Office from the governor’s office Vera Topasna and the State Historic Preservation Officer Patrick Lujan were also in attendance. Rear Adm. Benjamin Nicholson, commander of Joint Region Marianas (JRM) and JRM’s Command Master Chief William Webster participated alongside MCB Camp Blaz leadership and staff.

Guam Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard members conduct rescue hoist training at Sella Bay Overlook in Guam on March 8, 2023. Five Indo-Pacific Nations begin Exercise Sea Dragon
A U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon from the "Red Lancers" of Patrol Squadron (VP) 10 takes off from Kadena Air Base, March 3. The Red Lancers are based in Jacksonville, Florida, and are currently operating from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan.
