The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) transits the South China Sea, April 8,2017. The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group is on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of U.S. 3rd Fleet. U.S Navy aircraft carrier strike groups have patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific regularly and routinely for more than 70 years.

Tatsuya Fukuda, commander, Escort Flotilla 4, lands on the flight deck of the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) for the start of Exercise Keen Sword 2017 (KS17). Ronald Reagan is participating in Exercise KS17, a joint, bilateral field-training exercise involving U.S. military and Japan Self-Defense Force personnel designed to increase the combat readiness and interoperability of the Japan-U.S. alliance.

Submarine Rescue Exercise at RIMPAC
PACIFIC OCEAN (July 13, 2016) Sailors from the Chinese navy submarine rescue ship Changdao (867) retrieve an LR-7 submersible undersea rescue vehicle off the coast of Hawaii following a successful mating evolution between the LR-7 and a U.S. faux-NATO rescue seat laid by USNS Safeguard (T-ARS-50), during Rim of the Pacific 2016. The evolution was the final event and practical portion of a multinational submarine rescue exercise between seven countries. Twenty-six nations, more than 40 ships and submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 30 to Aug. 4, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2016 is the 25th exercise in the series that began in 1971.
