The mission was in response to a national emergency declared by President Surangel Whipps Jr. of Palau after Typhoon Surigae devastated the region.

Accompanying the Sequoia to Sonsorol was the Sonsorol State Governor Nicholas Aquino, Delegate Yutaka Gibbons, Jr., U.S. Ambassador John Hennessey-Niland, Lt. Cmdr. Clint Moore of the Royal Australian Navy, and Lt. Cmdr. Tommy Tomika of the Japan Coast Guard.

U.S. Military lands C130 on newly renovated Angaur Airfield in Palau
A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules delivered U.S. Army Pacific Soldiers onto the newly renovated Angaur Airfield for training exercises in the Republic of Palau, Sept. 6. The successful arrival of the military cargo plane validates the airstrip’s use by military and commercial aircraft. “The completion of the Angaur Airfield Joint Improvement Project is a game changer,” said U.S. Ambassador to Palau John Hennessy-Niland. “Palau now has a secondary airstrip. This had been a long-standing request from the government of Palau and the State of Angaur.”

Task Force Koa Moana 20 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Marines make history on Peleliu
U.S. Marine Corps Warrant Officer Jordan Torcello, an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officer and Sgt. Aaron A. Meroney, an EOD technician with the Littoral Explosive Ordnance Neutralization section of Task Force Koa Moana (TF KM) 20, I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), relocate an unexploded ordnance (UXO) item to a designated safe area in Peleliu, Republic of Palau, July 28, 2020. Marines and Sailors with TF KM20, I MEF, are conducting engagements in the Republic of Palau from July through September of 2020. Koa Moana, meaning “ocean warrior,” is designed to strengthen and enhance relationships between the U.S. and partner nations/states in the Indo-Pacific region, improve interoperability with local security establishments, and serve as a Humanitarian Assistance Survey Team afloat in support of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command’s strategic and operational objectives. TF KM20 provides a unique opportunity to enhance relationships in the Republic of Palau. The Koa Moana task force has taken extensive measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The health and safety of U.S. service members and Palauan citizens participating in TF KM20 is an enduring priority. Prior to deploying, all exercise members participated in a three-week quarantine. After arriving in Palau, the Marines and Sailors remain quarantined for an additional 14 days. To date, all members deployed as part of TF KM20 tested negative for COVID-19.

Task Force Koa Moana 20 Tests Negative for COVID-19
The crew of USCGC Sequoia (WLB 215) steams off Palau on June 1, 2020. The crew of Sequoia established ten new floating aids to navigation known as buoys and established or substantially rehabilitated 43 fixed aids to navigation in Palau’s main shipping channel. The U.S. Coast Guard, in partnership with U.S. Embassy Koror and with the support of the Department of the Interior, provided further aids-to-navigation infrastructure improvements in the waters of Koror, Palau in late May and early June.

Saipan Native Returns Home, Supports Typhoon Exercise
Lt. Col. Shane Nagatani, 199th Fighter Squadron commander, David M. Apatang, Saipan Mayor, Senior Airman Mark Abriham, 36th Communications Squadron radio technician, and Ralph Torres, Governor of Saipan, gather during an F-22 static display tour April 23, 2019, at the Francisco C. Ada International Airport, Saipan. Abriham, a Saipan native, returned home on military orders and supported the ‘Hawaiian Raptors’ during their inaugural visit to his home island. The movement of F-22 Raptor aircraft was part of the Pacific Air Forces exercise Resilient Typhoon, designed to prepare aircraft and personnel to disperse in the face of inclement weather.

5-20th Infantry Regiment Builds Partnership and Trains in Palau
Palauan law enforcement officers and Soldiers from 2nd platoon, A Company, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 1-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division train side by side at a new 25-meter flat range at a training area in the outskirts of Koror, Palau April 18, 2019 during Exercise Palau. Although not training together, the Palauans and Americans both made use of a range that was built in cooperation between U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) and Palauan security officials. Exercise Palau is part of Pacific Pathways, an annual USARPAC operation, demonstrating the U.S. Army's commitment to the Palau nation, and security cooperation for a free and open Indo-Pacific. The exercise will run from the 13th - 19th, and will include several security cooperation training events as well as community and animal health outreach services at several sites including Koror, Peleliu and Angaur.

Civil Action Team Palau Holds Change of Charge Ceremony
Air Force 2nd Lt. Colin Quitta, Civic Action Team (CAT) Palau 36-03 officer-in-charge, right, salutes Navy Capt. During the ceremony, U.S. Air Force 36th Civil Engineer Squadron CAT 36-03 was relieved by Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133 CAT 133-28. The Civic Action Team Palau provides construction support to the host nation, assists and trains apprentices with general engineering skills, facilitates a medical outreach program and conducts community service projects. CAT Palau is an integral part of the U.S. mission to assist and support the development of the Republic of Palau through the Compact of Free Association between the two nations. 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the CAT mission in Palau.
