Nimitz is currently underway in the Pacific Ocean conducting Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in preparation for an upcoming deployment. Meyer (DDG 108) cut vegetables at the Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen during a community service event in Singapore, April 5, 2017. Wayne E. Meyer is on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment with the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend U.S. 3rd Fleet command and control functions into the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike groups have routinely patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific for more than 70 years.

Missile-3 Block IIA in Hawaii
A Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA is launched from the guided-missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) during a flight test off Hawaii resulting in the first intercept of a ballistic missile target by the SM-3IIA, which is being developed cooperatively by the U.S. and Japan, Feb. 3, 2017. This test also marks the first time an SM-3IIA was launched from an Aegis ship and the first intercept engagement using the Aegis Baseline 9.C2 (BMD 5.1) weapon system.

America Completes CSSQT
Sailors assigned to amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) load ammo into the close-in weapons system (CIWS) for operational testing, Feb. 2, 2017. The CIWS is the last line of defense in protecting the ship against low flying aircraft, small boats and missile attacks. America is currently underway conducting routine operations in preparation for deployment later this year.

Coastal Riverine Group 1 Conducts 500 Nautical Mile Long Range Transit
Sailors assigned to Coastal Riverine Group (CRG) 1 oversee the lifting of a MK VI patrol boat in order to perform yearly scheduled maintenance at the Port Authority in Guam on Jan. 11, 2017. CRG 1 is assigned to Commander, Task Force 75, which is the primary expeditionary task force responsible for the planning and execution of coastal riverine operations, explosive ordnance disposal, diving engineering and construction, and underwater construction in the U.S. 7th fleet area of operations.

Surface Navy Association National Symposium Kicks Off
Rear Adm. John Wade, commander, Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC), delivers remarks during the 29th annual Surface Navy Association (SNA) National Symposium on the status of SMWDC's warfare tactics instructor (WTI) program, Jan. 10, 2017. Wade highlighted the 125 WTIs across the fleet specializing in amphibious warfare, anti-submarine/anti-surface warfare and integrated air and missile defense. SMWDC biannually selects an elite cadre of tactically advanced junior Surface Warfare Officers to become WTIs - the best of the best in doctrine and tactics. These new generation surface warfighters are the talent entrusted to deliver the advanced training, tools and tactics mentioned in the 2017 Surface Force Strategy. In 2016, WTIs led the Navy's first Surface Warfare Advanced Tactical Training (SWATT) exercise with USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group and wrote and revised 23 tactical publications - a fivefold increase over the preceding six years. This year's SNA Symposium focuses on "Distributed Lethality: Enabling Sea Control."

USS John C. Stennis Arrives in Hawaii for 75th Anniversary of Attack on Pearl Harbor and Oahu
Seaman Eliza Manuel, from Memphis, Tennessee, salutes as USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) passes the Arizona Memorial and arrives at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam to participate in National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day events. Dec. 7, 2016, marks the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor and Oahu. The U.S. military and the State of Hawaii are hosting a series of remembrance events throughout the week to honor the courage and sacrifices of those who served Dec. 7, 1941, and throughout the Pacific Theater. As a Pacific nation, the U.S. is committed to continue its responsibility of protecting the Pacific sea-lanes, advancing international ideals and relationships, as well as delivering security, influence and responsiveness in the region.

The F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) variant is the world’s first supersonic STOVL stealth aircraft. America, with Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 (VMX-1), Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211 (VMFA-211) and Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23) embarked, are underway conducting operational testing and the third phase of developmental testing for the F-35B Lightning II aircraft, respectively. The tests will evaluate the full spectrum of joint strike fighter measures of suitability and effectiveness in an at-sea environment.
