Sept. 7, 2016
U.S. Pacific Command public affairs officer Lt. Col. Derrick Cheng provided the following readout:
The Commander of U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Harry B. Harris, Jr. met with Chinese People's Liberation Army (Navy), Adm. Sun Jianguo, the Deputy Chief for the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission, during the 2016 Chiefs of Defense (CHOD) Conference in Manila, Philippines, Sept. 7.
Adm. Harris and Adm. Sun discussed the importance of continued dialogue between the two countries to address common challenges and manage differences, including where the two militaries have demonstrated a focused, cooperative approach to the relationship.
Adm. Harris described upcoming engagements by various levels of military leaders to both countries including the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) meeting in November. These engagements help to build understanding and reduce the potential for accidents and miscalculation.
Both admirals agreed that the G20 and Chiefs of Defense Conference successfully advanced the relationship between the U.S. and China, and countries throughout the region.
