US and Japanese Navy Chiefs Continue to Advance Relationship
27 July 2016
From Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson participated in a video teleconference (VTC) July 26 with his Japanese counterpart, Chief of Staff, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Adm. Tomohisa Takei. The discussion focused on strengthening the long-standing partnership between the two navies, with a specific emphasis on improved information sharing.
"Maintaining a regular dialogue with Admiral Takei helps our two navies stay well connected and aligned," said Richardson. "Our forces work together day in and day out across the Pacific and Japan is one ally that is very interoperable with us, even in high-end operations. These calls, along with our regular face to face meetings, provide an opportunity to address top priorities and longer-term issues that may not get covered in daily interaction. They help us maintain the friendship and alliance on a solid track.
CNO and Takei agreed that enhanced cooperation and information sharing among allies and partners is necessary to maintaining maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in high-traffic water waterways.
The two leaders last met in person in February. This is their second VTC in the last year.
