31st Marine Expeditionary Unit Conducting Japan Observer Exchange Program

19 July 2016

From Staff Sgt. T. T. Parish

CAMP HANSEN, Japan -- 31st MEU and JGSDF are conducting several interoperability exercises to include swim qualification; Shallow Water and Egress Trainer; small boat basic skills training; and close air support skills training during the 12-day program.

The JOEP will allow the JGSDF troops to observe and practice a series of amphibious operations training events conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps. The program will improve the individual tactical skills of the JGSDF troops and enhance the partnership between the U.S. and Japan.

The observation and training by the JGSDF troops demonstrate the continued commitment of the United States and Japan to strengthen the relationship between our militaries and maintain a strong partnership to protect Japan from external aggression.

U.S. and Japanese Forces have a long history of working together, and we value every opportunity to learn from one another and maintain the readiness of our militaries.
