08 January 2016

The Republic of Korea (ROK), the United States, and Japan held a senior-level video-teleconference on Jan. 7, 2016 to share information among the three countries regarding the recent North Korean nuclear test conducted on Jan. 6, 2016 (KST).

At this meeting, Deputy Minister Yoo, the ROK Deputy Minister of National Defense for Policy; Ambassador David Shear, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs; and Director General Satoshi Maeda, the Japanese Ministry of Defense Director General for Defense Policy represented their respective countries.

At this meeting, the ROK, U.S. and Japan agreed that North Korea's fourth nuclear test is a provocative act that represents a flagrant violation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions and a serious threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the entire region. The officials reiterated that they do not and will not accept North Korea as a nuclear state and decided to continue to cooperate closely and share information on North Korea's nuclear threat.
