The U.S. Embassy supported a three-day intensive counter narcotics training for the Lao Counter Narcotic Police Departments from four southern provinces. The training began on Wednesday September 16, 2015, at the Provincial Conference Hall in Attapu province.
The instructors from the Lao Counter Narcotics Police Department conducted the training, which included a general overview of the narcotic trends in the region and worldwide. They also discussed surveillance, conducting arrests, investigation-interrogation, evidence handling methodology, research and analysis, drug prevention campaigns and current drug legislation. The participants and instructors shared their experiences from the field.
Speaking to the 76 participants at the opening ceremony, the Chairman of Lao National Commission for Drug Control and Supervision, Mr. Kou Chansina noted that the role of today’s Counter Narcotics Police is more important than ever to prevent drug addiction and drug related crimes.
Police Department Director General, Lt. Col. Onphiew Khongviengthong thanked the US Embassy for assisting Lao counter-narcotics police in their efforts to combat illicit drugs and their harmful effects on the nation. As the Lao PDR prepares to enter the Asia Economic Community this year, this training helps the Lao counter-narcotics police to cope with the challenges increased trade will pose to security services.
