SAMC of Hawaii Collects for Toys for Tots
18 December 2013
From Staff Sgt. Gaelen Lowers
For many, the holidays are a time of joy, gift giving, and family, but for others it can be a stressful time and a reminder of a poor financial situation.
The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club of Hawaii, who has a long standing history of supporting the community, teamed up with the Marine Toys for Tots organization for a toy drive prior to a noncommissioned officer run, Dec. 13, in order to provide gifts to economically disadvantaged children during the holiday season.
The drive collected more than 100 toys from noncommissioned officers representing all of the 8th Theater Sustainment Command units.
"The Toys for Tots brand is a very recognizable and respected charity," said Staff Sgt. Janet Chavez, the event's organizer and the public affairs representative for the SAMC of Hawaii. "We knew by using their brand, people would immediately know what the organization is and who the donations were for."
SAMC exemplifies leadership characterized through personal concern for the needs, training, development, and welfare of Soldiers, their families, and the surrounding community, said Chavez. The club continually participates in community events and donates its time and energy for the betterment of everyone.
"You never know what people's financial circumstances are like," Chavez said. "I feel like this is the time to give, and if you can give, then why not give to the kids. They're innocent."
She added, "Just one toy can make the difference for someone during the holidays."
