Multinational Forces Arrive for Exercise Freedom Shield 2026 - Reaffirming Commitment to Stability

09 March 2026

From Maj. Belinda Culley, United Nations Command

CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States (U.S.), in collaboration with the United Nations Command (UNC), have commenced the annual Freedom Shield 26 (FS26) exercise from March 9-19, 2026.

This defensive exercise is designed to enhance the combined, joint, all-domain, and interagency operational environment, thereby strengthening the Alliance's collective response and improve joint readiness.

To bolster the UNC Headquarters, augmentees from UNC Member States have arrived on the Korean Peninsula. Their arrival underscores the international community's enduring commitment to maintaining the armistice and ensuring the security and stability of the region.

The UNC facilitates the coordination of Member State contributions such as military capabilities, humanitarian aid and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations in response to crises or conflicts on the Korean Peninsula.

Upon their arrival, the multinational augmentees participated in an orientation designed to provide crucial context for the mission. The orientation included a visit to the Joint Security Area (JSA) at Panmunjom, the only portion of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where North and South Korean forces stand face-to-face.

This was followed by a visit to the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul to learn more about the Korean War and UNC contributions. The UNC Deputy Commander (DCOM), Lieutenant General Scott Winter, and augmentees were welcomed by the Vice Chairman of the Republic of Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, Lieutenant General Kwon, Dae-Won.

Lt. Gen Winter emphasized the importance of these visits, stating, "It's always critical that we understand why we are here.

“The visit to the JSA is an opportunity for all the augmentees to gain context and understand the sacrifices that have gone before them for the last 75 years.

“They can then understand the importance of the contribution they are making during the exercise to security on the Korean Peninsula."

The participation of multiple nations in FS26 also serves as a powerful symbol of unity and deterrence.

"There's a lot of theory around what constitutes deterrence. But one thing we do know is that many flags make a difference in the mind of potential adversaries," Lt. Gen Winter explained.

"Each nation coming here, recommitting themselves to security on the peninsula through their presence during an exercise, is a great opportunity for us to fly those flags together."

The UNC, established in 1950, signifies the world's first attempt at collective security under the United Nations system.

Today, it continues to play a vital role in preserving peace by enforcing the Armistice Agreement and integrating multinational forces in support of a stable Korean Peninsula.
