HANOI, Embassy & Consulates in Vietnam -- The U.S. delivered an additional 1,499,940 life-saving doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to assist Vietnam in its fight against COVID-19, Oct. 2. These doses were delivered through COVAX and came directly from the Pfizer manufacturing plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This delivery follows three previous donations totaling six million vaccine doses that the United States has provided to Vietnam through the COVAX Facility.

The United States and Vietnam continue to build on our longstanding cooperation with more than $1 billion U.S. investment in Vietnam’s health infrastructure to strengthen Vietnam’s capacity to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to these donations of 7.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, the United States has committed more than $26.7 million in COVID-19 related assistance to Vietnam since the start of the pandemic.

In addition to the 7.5 million vaccine doses the United States donated through the COVAX Facility, Vietnam has received 4,176,00 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from the COVAX Facility. The COVAX Facility is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations (CEPI), GAVI – the Vaccine Alliance, World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF as key delivery partners. The United States is the largest single country contributor to COVAX, and through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. government has contributed $4 billion to support COVAX’s procurement and delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to 92 low- and middle-income economies.

In June, President Biden announced that the United States would also purchase and donate half a billion Pfizer vaccines to 92 low- and lower middle-income economies and the African Union. At the Global COVID-⁠19 Summit on September 22, the President announced bold new commitments from the United States to supply an additional 500 million doses of Pfizer vaccine, bringing the U.S. total commitment of donated vaccines to over 1.1 billion.

Worldwide, the United States has provided more than 160 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to more than 100 countries. We will continue to donate additional vaccine doses globally as supply becomes available. We are also working with U.S. vaccine manufacturers to increase vaccine supply for the rest of the world and with partners to expand global vaccine production and manufacturing capacity to beat this pandemic.
