ANZUS: Celebrating 70 Years of the U.S.-Australia Alliance
01 September 2021
Download
CANBERRA, U.S. Embassy in Australia -- The U.S. Embassy in Australia is proud to mark the 70th anniversary of the ANZUS treaty on September 1.
First signed in San Francisco in 1951, the treaty confirmed both the United States and Australia’s commitment to a shared vision for an Indo-Pacific that is secure, stable, and prosperous.
It is a testament to our common values, our deep mutual trust, and our unwavering commitment that this alliance is stronger, broader, and more vital today than it was 70 years ago.
It is an alliance that has been tested and proven on every shared battlefield since World War I and today our security partnership continues to evolve and adapt, building ever-greater resilience, flexibility, and strength.
Today, the United States and Australia are working together to address the many challenges facing our world. We are investing together in space exploration, new technologies, research, and education. The United States remains Australia’s most important economic partner and the largest source of foreign investment in Australia, investment that directly supports high-wage jobs in dynamic industries.
“The 70th anniversary of ANZUS is a moment to reflect but also to look forward and commit to making our alliance as relevant to our future generations as it has been in the past”, says Mr. Goldman. “Our alliance today helps underpin the stability of the region and promote democracy in the Indo-Pacific. It serves to support our joint work in promoting human rights, defending a rules-based order, assisting our Pacific neighbors, and cooperating on health and climate change.”
“We see Australia as a leader in the region and upon the world stage; a trusted partner, a firm ally, and a truly close friend. We look forward to celebrating the next 70 years, and beyond, of the ANZUS Alliance.” – Chargé d’Affaires Michael Goldman.
