U.S. and Indonesia Strengthen Partnership with Garuda Shield 2021 Military Exercise

02 August 2021

U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Indonesia -- Soldiers from the U.S. and Indonesian Armies will participate in exercise Garuda Shield 2021 from August 4-14, 2021, at Baturaja Training Area, Amborawang, and Makalisung. This U.S. Army Pacific-sponsored exercise, which involves approximately 1,000 U.S. and 850 Indonesian Army Soldiers, enhances combined interoperability capabilities through training and cultural exchange.

This exercise continues to solidify the U.S.-Indonesia Major Defense Partnership and advances cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Garuda Shield 2021 provides excellent opportunities for professional and cultural exchanges that strengthen our partnership through shared learning and training. Training commences with expert academic exchanges and professional development workshops that focus on training at the corps-level and below; combat against conventional, unconventional and hybrid threats; and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

The command post exercise (CPX) will focus on U.N. peacekeeping operation staff tasks in a combined military setting. A field training exercise (FTX) will involve company-strength elements from each nation exercising combined, fundamental war-fighting skills to enhance interoperability and combined operational capacity. The CPX and FTX will run concurrently.

Questions regarding this exercise should be directed to the 2-25 IBCT Public Affairs Officer, Major James Sheehan at james.p.sheehan.mil@mail.mil and SSG Calvert at thomas.e.calvert9.mil@mail.mil.
