JAKARTA, Indonesia – U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim officially handed over 83 brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators for use in Central Java in a virtual event on Friday. These 83 ventilators are a portion of the 1,000 ventilators that the United States has donated to Indonesia through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to assist its fight against COVID-19.

“Today’s event illustrates the United States’ commitment to partnering with Indonesia in the fight against COVID-19. These ventilators will support Central Java’s hospitals in treating patients with the disease. We are proud to cooperate on disease prevention, diagnostics, and capacity building– through USAID, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. businesses, and other partners,” said U.S. Ambassador Sung Y. Kim.

The donated ventilators are compact and deployable and can support both invasive and non-invasive applications, which gives Indonesia flexibility in treating patients affected by the COVID-19. The U.S. Government assistance provided includes accompanying equipment, warranties, and shipping. Also through USAID, the United States is funding training for health workers in using the equipment along with standard operating procedures and maintenance so that hospitals can help more patients recover. Beyond this donation, U.S. emergency assistance to support Indonesia’s fight against COVID-19 totals approximately $11 million.

Governor Pranowo said during his press remarks: “These state-of-the-art ventilators are very useful. The assistance reflects primarily on the good relationship between Indonesia and the United States. We thank the U.S. government and USAID for their assistance and look forward to continuing the strong collaboration in other sectors.”

The United States is the largest contributor to global health, and continues to help friends and allies through an “All-of-America” effort that includes government, business, NGOs, and faith-based aid. Over the past 20 years, USAID has invested over $1 billion into Indonesia’s health sector, building a strong foundation for a more effective COVID-19 response. The ventilators are just one aspect of the U.S. Embassy’s emergency assistance to Indonesia in the fight against COVID-19.
