SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) supported Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) during the 2019 Fleet Maintenance & Modernization Symposium (FMMS) August 8-9 at the San Diego Convention Center.
FMMS is an annual event of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) where the Navy’s ship maintenance and modernization community meets to share information. At this year’s event, SWRMC’s participation at the NAVSEA Exhibitor Booth included displays of Remote Operated Vehicles used by Navy Divers and 3-D printed parts from SWRMC’s additive manufacturing lab.
“SWRMC is honored to support NAVSEA at this event,” said Capt. David Hart, SWRMC’s commanding officer. “We are focused on process improvement at our command in alignment with NAVSEA’s Strategic Framework, and this is a great event to share some of those ideas, and hear from leaders in the community on innovative improvements we can use at SWRMC.”
SWRMC’s divers and additive manufacturing lab capabilities are examples of alignment to the NAVSEA Strategic Framework. Both are focused on supporting the on time delivery of our ships and improving warfighting capabilities, while sustaining a culture of affordability.
In addition to exhibit both support, SWRMC’ s Chief Engineer, Monique Kadmiri, and SWRMC’s leading Gas Turbine Engineer, Bruce Thompson, gave a presentation on the need for in-place repair of gas turbine engines. Thompson, a leader in the gas turbine field for several decades, specifically discussed the importance of having flexibility in the program to allow ships to meet operational requirements while minimizing cost and schedule impacts.
“By building this flexibility into the Gas Turbine (GT) maintenance program, SWRMC can quickly determine the best solution to return the GT engines to operational condition, said Thompson. “This flexibility saves the Navy money and provides on time, cost effective and innovative solutions.”
Also during the symposium was an award presentation to SWRMC Sailor, Petty Officer 2nd Class Adam T. Barber, who received a Letter of Commendation (LOC) for his work advancing the scope of the Navy and Marine Corps Miniature/Micro-miniature Module Test and Repair (2M/MTR) Program. The LOC was signed for the Chief of Naval Operations by Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Integration of Capabilities and Resources, Vice Adm. William Lescher, and presented to Barber by Naval Sea Systems Command Deputy Commander for Ship Design, Integration and Engineering, Rear Adm. Lorin Selby.
“SWRMC is very proud of the great team we have,” added Hart. “We have a lot of diverse capabilities, and it was great to be able to showcase some of those at FMMS, while highlighting the support we are providing the warfighter and the Fleet by ensuring our ships are safe and ready.”
SWRMC is meeting its mission to provide superior ship maintenance, modernization, technical support and training for the Pacific Fleet.
