UNC Military Armistice Commission welcomes new Senior Member

29 May 2019

CAMP HUMPHREYS, PYEONGTAEK, Republic of Korea –United Nations Command welcomed on Tuesday its new United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) Senior Member and bid farewell to his predecessor during a change-of-responsibility ceremony held at Camp Humphreys.

After one year as the Senior Member of UNCMAC, Major General Shin Sang Bum relinquished his position as Senior Member of UNCMAC in the General Paik Auditorium to Major General Kim Jong Moon. In 1991, the first General Officer from the Republic of Korea (ROK) was appointed as the Senior Member of the UNCMAC.

General Robert B. "Abe" Abrams, the Commander of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces Korea, said, "Today’s ceremony gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the good work of Maj Gen Shin Sang Bum and to welcome Maj Gen Kim Jong Moon but perhaps more importantly, it provides us a chance to come together and recognize the outstanding efforts and indispensable nature of the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission and rededicate ourselves to supporting the work of the commission as our diplomats and senior leaders continue to see progress towards a final peace in Korea."

Major General Kim was educated at the Korea Military Academy, National Defense University, and ROK Army College. He brings with him over 30 years’ experience in operations, artillery, infantry, in joint and ROK-US CFC operations.

During his speech, Major General Kim said, "MG Shin well performed his duties as Senior Member for the past year in maintaining the Armistice system. Under the guidance of General Abrams, he led UNCMAC well in support of the CMA (Comprehensive Military Agreement) and I, as Senior Member, will put my humble endeavors to meet those wishes. I will build upon the proud legacy of former Senior Members."

UNCMAC supervises the implementation of the Korean Armistice Agreement of 1953. UNCMAC monitors the armistice, investigates incidents, and provides a mechanism to negotiate alleged violations of the truce. They supervise the Armistice along the 243 kilometre long Demilitarized Zone.
