CAMP ZAMA, Japan -- Zama American Middle High School's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps' "Trojan" Battalion welcomed its new cadet commander during a change-of-command ceremony here May 14.

Cadet Lt. Col. Maxwell Orlosky, a junior at ZAMHS, said the path to his leadership role was paved with challenges, but was proud of the effort he put in to reach such a level of achievement.

"I feel honored to be selected to be in charge of this great unit," Maxwell said during the ceremony.

As cadet commander of the battalion, Maxwell's responsibilities include managing the unit and ensuring he and his fellow cadets continue their mission to develop themselves as model student citizens.

"I hope to make [our unit] better and improve it throughout the year," said Maxwell.

One of the reasons Maxwell joined the JROTC program, he said, was the positive influence his father had on him and a desire to emulate his character.

"I was inspired to be like my dad, who is in the U.S. Navy," said Maxwell.

Maxwell said he would like to pursue service in the military sometime in the future.

David Orlosky, Maxwell's father, said his son has worked very hard and really enjoys what he does in the JROTC. Orlosky said he is happy to know he has been a positive influence on Maxwell, and hopes his son will find values and meaning if he one day joins the military.

"I am very proud of what he has achieved," said Orlosky.

Retired Lt. Col. Douglas Fields, the JROTC instructor, said the new battalion commander was selected on merit, his performance throughout the school year, and also from recommendations from not only ZAMHS faculty but also the outgoing leadership.

Fields said he is very proud of the new leadership and every one of the cadets in the battalion. He hopes they will continue to develop their citizenship and teamwork throughout the year.

"These cadets are truly amazing," said Fields.
