Under Secretary of the Navy Completes Orientation Visit to Guam

01 October 2018
GUAM -- Under Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly completed an orientation visit to the island of Guam, Sept. 30, 2018.

Modly was in the area to meet with local government officials to discuss bilateral and multilateral maritime security issues efforts and to meet with local U.S. military commands.

A meeting was held with Ray Tenorio, lieutenant governor of Guam.

Modly discussed – among other topics – improving our security cooperation shared security interests, and our mutual desire for safety, security and prosperity in the region.

Modly also spent time touring military installations in Guam operated by Joint Region Marianas.

“The United States has a long and historic relationship with the people of Guam. Many Sailors and Marines gave their lives in its liberation in World War II and today more than 6,000 service members from across DOD serve in Guam as part of the United States forward deployed presence,” said Modly. “I enjoyed the opportunity to meet with the team at Joint Region Marianas and to tour the facilities on the Island and gain a first-hand perspective. The work they do on Guam is critical to U.S. national security in the Pacific.”

Modly visited Headquarters, Joint Region Marianas; Naval Base Guam; Commander, Task Force (CTF) 75; and Marine Corps Activity Guam, and also received an aerial tour of the island from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 25.

Modly's stop in Guam is part of a multi-nation visit to the Oceania region focused on strengthening partnerships and cooperation.
