HAKODATE, Japan -– USS Chief (MCM 14) pulled into Hakodate, Japan, July 14, for a goodwill port visit and training.

Chief, an Avenger-class mine countermeasure ship, is crewed by roughly 90 Sailors. Port visits like this onegives the Sailors aboard an opportunity to interact with the people of Hakodate, who have not received a port visit from the U.S. Navy since 2016.

“I have not been to Hakodate in ten years,” said Lt. Cdr. Frederick Crayton, Chief’s commanding officer. “I look forward to seeing how much the city has changed, and letting a new generation of Sailors experience this city and its people.”

Chief’s crew will use the time in port to participate in community clean ups, explore local monuments, and play sports with the locals.

“Engaging with the people here builds a brotherhood,” said Mineman 3rd Class Derrick Price, “It shows that we are not just about our work, we can shake hands, have fun and build a connection with people wherever we go.”

Chief will continue training after this brief rest, but its Sailors will build lasting memories and relationships with the people of Hakodate.
