JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii -- Republic of Korea Army Gen. Byung Joo Kim, Combined Forces Command deputy commander and staff visited headquarters (HQ) Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) during a four-day visit at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, May 21, 2018.
During the visit Kim received a historic tour of Pearl Harbor, and met with Pacific Command leadership and leadership from the military components stationed here. U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Russ Mack, PACAF deputy commander, hosted Kim at HQ PACAF where the two discussed ways forward for the Indo-Pacific region.
“We have had an approximate 65-year relationship between the United States and the Republic of Korea,” said Mack. “As our roles continue to evolve in the region, the tremendous support they provide is invaluable to the mission.”
The generals also discussed future joint exercises and opportunities to integrate the Republic of Korea air force’s (ROKAF) first F-35 Lighting II received this year.
“The incredible capabilities we have with the 5th generation aircraft provides great opportunities to expand our training together,” Mack said. “We look forward to incorporating ROKAF’s new capabilities in future exercises.”
The U.S.-ROK alliance is more than a military pact; it is a comprehensive partnership that promotes freedom and democracy in this region and the world.
“This is truly an important visit for me, because it gave me the opportunity to speak with leadership,” Kim said. “The people of South Korea support and thank the U.S. for their continued support and strong relationship.”
