Army Reserve Celebrates Earth Day Across the Nation
25 April 2018
From Ms. Jonelle Kimbrough
The United States Army Reserve observed Earth Day with events across the nation during Earth Week on April 16 through April 22.
Army Reserve Sustainability Programs commenced its Earth Day activities on Wednesday, April 18 with a Spring Clean Donation Drive and an information station on energy, water, solid waste and environmental quality initiatives at the Office of the Chief of Army Reserve at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Soldiers, Civilians and Family members can donate clothing and household goods at OCAR for a District of Columbia-area charity through April 30.
Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico celebrated its 11th Annual Earth Day Exposition on Thursday, April 19. This year's theme was Energy Security and Resiliency. Students from Installation schools and Families enjoyed activities presented by agencies such as the Puerto Rico National Guard, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the United States Geological Survey, the Puerto Rico Bat Conservation Program and the University of Puerto Rico. Speakers included Fort Buchanan's Garrison Commander Colonel Guy D. Bass and Environmental Division Chief Anibal Négron. During Earth Week, the Fort Buchanan Directorate of Public Works also conducted Building Energy Monitor and sustainable procurement training for its personnel.
The 9th Mission Support Command hosted its annual Earth Day celebration on Friday, April 20 at Fort Shafter Flats, Hawaii. Patrons enjoyed education stations from the Mission Support Command's Environmental Quality Program, the City and County of Honolulu and local farmers. Earlier in the month, community volunteers participated in the annual "Mauka to Makai" Pearl City Bicycle Path and stream beautification project. The 9th Mission Support Command has contributed to the project for 11 consecutive years, and the City and County of Honolulu has lauded their continuous efforts with Environmental Hero Awards. The Command also held a unit recycling competition among Soldiers and Civilians at Fort Shafter Flats to encourage waste reduction.
Elsewhere in the Command, the 88th Readiness Division leveraged social media to encourage its communities to reduce plastic pollution. Parks Reserve Forces Training Area, California hosted a paper shredding and recycling event.
