About the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate

The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate (OSJA) delivers full-spectrum legal support to preserve peace through strength, enhance deterrence, build legal force readiness, and counter-lawfare in support of COMUSINDOPACOM’s Theater Campaign Plan and a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.  In keeping with COMUSINDOPACOM’s objectives, the OSJA upholds USINDOPACOM’s commitment to a secure, free, and prosperous Indo-Pacific, and actively seeks to strengthen relationships with Allies and Partners through direct collaboration and information sharing.

Counter-lawfare is a cross-functional initiative to think, act, and operate differently in the legal domain.  As an element of USINDOPACOM’s campaign approach, counter-lawfare contributes to deterrence by upholding the stable international system that has supported global security for nearly a century, and contesting efforts by potential adversaries to undermine security, freedom, and prosperity for the U.S., our Allies, and our partners.  Likewise, counter-lawfare seeks to deny potential adversaries from using “legal warfare” as a tool for coercion or pretext for aggression.  In practice, counter-lawfare consists of legal vigilance (monitoring and responding to trends in the legal environment), support to operations in the information environment, and legal diplomacy designed to foster resilience and strength in numbers.

Among other reference materials, the informational products featured on this webpage include Tactical Aids (TACAIDs), combined information papers, regular Legal Vigilance Updates, and the OSJA’s quarterly newsletter, the Legal Vigilance Dispatch.  These products contain legal opinion and analysis produced by the OSJA to highlight important legal issues affecting the Indo-Pacific region and USINDOPACOM’s mission.  Please contact the OSJA with any feedback or questions.
