Captain Peter Roberts earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Middlebury College, Vermont. He subsequently earned his MD degree from Temple University School of Medicine and completed residencies in general and cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Roberts was commissioned in the Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant while on the faculty as an Assistant Professor at UC Davis School of Medicine, Department of Surgery and at Shriner’s Hospital for Children Northern California. During his academic career he has authored dozens of peer reviewed medical articles and book chapters and has been an invited lecturer at national and international scientific meetings.

In 2003, he transitioned to active duty and established a cardiothoracic surgery program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), serving initially as department head. He was elected President of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, serving in that role from 2005 to 2009. He deployed to Iraq with 2nd MLG in support of OIF, holding positions as the Director of Surgical Services (DSS) and Forward Resuscitative Surgical System (FRSS) OIC at Camp Al Taqaddum and as a thoracic surgeon at Balad Air Force Theater Hospital.

After serving as DSS at NMCP from 2009-2011, he was selected to be the first American Executive Officer at the NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan, dual hatted as Deputy Commander, Task Force Med South under Task Force Med Afghanistan. Upon returning from Afghanistan, he was assigned to U.S. Fleet Forces Command, assuming duties as CTF-80 Surgeon and Head, Medical Plans and Operations.

From 2014-2016, CAPT Roberts completed a successful tour as Deputy Commanding Officer at Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii improving access to primary care while responsible for tertiary care throughout the Pacific Region. During his subsequent tour as Commanding Officer, MTF USNS MERCY (2016-2018), he led two Pacific Partnership missions. He spent nearly one year at sea engaging with more than a dozen Indo-Pacific nations furthering theater security cooperation, global health and preparations for all hazards planning and foreign humanitarian assistance.

CAPT Roberts served as Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, Fleet Surgeon from 2018 to 2021. He was responsible for health support to fleet operations, including C3F’s medical response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He provided critical leadership in the command’s Defense Support to Civil Authorities response to U.S. Northern Command and force generation of more than 25,000 sailors and marines during the pandemic.

From 2021 through 2023 he served as Commander, Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Camp Pendleton and Director, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. He followed with a tour as the Assistant Naval Inspector General for Medical Affairs and assumed responsibilities as Command Surgeon, Indo-Pacific Command in February 2025.

His personal decorations include Legion of Merit (four awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. He is qualified to wear the Fleet Marine Force and Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer devices.
