Chief of Staff, Joint Task Force Micronesia

Colonel Alejandro “Alex” L. Buniag Jr. was born on the island of Saipan and was commissioned in December 2001 through the University of Guam, Army ROTC Program. COL Buniag holds a Bachelor of Art degree with concentration in Elementary Education and Master’s Degrees in Public Administration and Strategic Studies.

Colonel Buniag’ s previous leadership positions include Horizontal Platoon Leader, Vertical Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Commander of Company C, 411th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy); Commander of the 797th Engineer Company (Vertical); Brigade Engineer, Current Operations, Plans Officer and S-3 Operations Officer, 303rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Ft. Shafter, Hawaii; Commander, Theater Support Group, American Samoa Detachment, Pago Pago, American Samoa; Chief of Strategic Plans, 9th Mission Support Command, Ft. Shafter, Hawaii; Director, Army Coordination Element-Guam, Santa Rita, Guam; and currently Chief of Staff, Joint Task Force Micronesia.

Colonel Buniag served as a key leader in several USINDOPACOM Theater Security Cooperation Exercises. Notably, he served as the Deputy Commander, Combined Joint Civil Military Operations Task Force in support of Cobra Gold 2014 and 2015, Kingdom of Thailand and Commander, Joint Civil Military Operations Task Force in support of Balikatan 2016, Republic of the Philippines.

Colonel Buniag served on missions: Operation Iraqi Freedom II (2004-05) Horizontal and Vertical Platoon Leader, 411th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), 1st Calvary Division; Title-10 Deputy Dual Status Commander, Joint Task Force 671 and Deputy Commander, Task Force West in support of Typhoon Mawar disaster response.

Colonel Buniag’ s military education includes: Engineer Officer Basic Course (Distinguished Graduate), Engineer Captain’s Career Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, United States Army Command and General Staff College, Basic Military Mountaineering Course, Combatives Trainer Level I Course, Unit Movement Officer Course, Unit Mobilization Planner Course, Anti-Terrorism Advisor Course, Unit Trainer Course, Humanitarian Assistance Response Training Course, FEMA Emergency Management Course, Defense Support to Civil Authorities Phase II Course, Joint Engineer Operations Course, Senior Officer Legal Orientation Course, Battalion and Maneuver Enhancement Brigade Pre-Command Course, Theater Army Staff Course, and the Air War College.

Colonel Buniag’ s awards include: Meritorious Service Medal (4th Award), Army Commendation Medal (4th Award) including one for heroism, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon and the Philippine Military Civic Action Medal. Colonel Buniag is a recipient of the de Fleury Bronze Medal and the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award.

Colonel Buniag, in his civilian capacity, is an Educational Technologist with the Department of Defense Education Activity. He is also an active member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Guam Post, Army Engineer Association (AEA), and the Association of the United States Army (AUSA).
