Local Hospital Gives Back to Garrison Korean Nationals

23 February 2015

From U.S. Army

The Soon Cheon Hyang Hospital and U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan strengthened their relationship with a committment of medical support to Korean personnel operating in the garrison.

"This is an excellent opportunity for our local Korean National personnel in the post to recieve quality medical care from one of the best hospitals within Seoul," said Col. Maria P. Eoff, garrison commander, USAG-Yongsan. "This shows that the hospital is committed to helping its citizens and promoting the U.S., and Korean alliance."

The Soon Cheon Hyang University Hospital (SCHU Hospital) offers service for USAG Yongsan to appreciate the service and the protection the garrison provides to the hospital and the Republic of Korea.

In operation since 1974, the SCHU Hospital stands strong as one of the best hospitals in South Korea. With its up-to-date facilities and well-trained staff, the Hospital provides first-class medical support to the Korean Nationals and their family members serving their country in USAG Yongsan with a fifty percent discount of medical examinations, regardless of the units the KNs are assigned.

Suh You Sung, President of SCHU Hospital, visited the Garrison Commander, Col. Maria P. Eoff, at her office on Jan 31, and shared his views on the cooperation of the Garrison and the Hospital.

"Due to your consideration (of providing the parking lots at Hannam village to the physicians of the Hospital), we were able to resolve the hardships of traffic congestions nearby our hospital. As myself being a member of the Yongsan Korean American Friendship Council, I hope this (contract) strengthens the ROK-US alliance." Seo said.

Though the SCHU Hospital's proposition is mostly a token of appreciation for the Garrison, this service is also a result of a recent agreement held between the Garrison and the Hospital. In cooperation with the USAG Yongsan Community Relations Officer, An Chang Sin, the SCHU Hospital doctors are granted access to the Hannam Village Parking Lot. With this is provided a deduced price for 14 package close-up examinations.

For Korean Nationals working in the Garrison to make use of the hospitality, all that is required of them is the USFK ID Card signifying their service in USAG Yongsan. This allows for them to make use of the Fourteen Health Care Systems at half prices, varying from Smart Check Up program --the SCHU Hospital's signature service- to PET Scans.

President Suh concluded the day's conference with the Garrison commander with his final remarks.
"With the help of the Garrison, our problems are solved, and the Korean Nationals at the Garrison are receiving health care at our hospital -- this would be a true 'Good Neighbor Program' in terms of its complimentary results."
