POLARIS POINT, Guam -- Navy Surgeon General and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Rear Adm. Bruce Gillingham, visited the submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40), Jan. 17.

The surgeon general toured the ship's dive locker and medical ward before speaking with hospital corpsmen and medical officers about the Defense Health Agency and his new guiding principles.

Gillingham's guiding principles discuss how the optimization of people, platforms, performance and power will enhance lethality through the increased survivability of the fighting force.

"This visit was great for our Sailors because it gave them the opportunity to hear directly from the surgeon general about changes being implemented and how the changes will affect them," said Chief Hospital Corpsman Aaron Deguzman.

The surgeon general spoke about the future of Navy medicine and new training programs and incentives before holding a brief question and answer session with medical staff.

"It was encouraging to see that they're pushing more towards training and specialties," said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Louis Machado. "It's nice to know hospital corpsmen are being rewarded for all of their hard work."

Gillingham also toured the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723) before departing Frank Cable. Frank Cable, forward deployed to the island of Guam, repairs, rearms, and re-provisions submarines and surface vessels in the Indo-Pacific region.
