Brigadier General Alex Day joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in 1985, attending Royal Roads Military College and the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) before proceeding to pilot training in Moose Jaw, SK. After receiving his pilot wings, he was posted to Cold Lake, AB for training as a fighter pilot on the CF-18.

BGen Day completed flying tours at 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron (twice), 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron, as 4 Wing Operations Officer, and at 2 Operational Conversion Unit on exchange with the Royal Australian Air Force, where he amassed over 2,800 hours as a combat pilot, instructor pilot and Fighter Weapons Instructor.

Past staff tours include Director General Air Staff/Air Reserve, Special Advisor to the Commander of Canadian Joint Operations Command, Director of Fighter Capability Requirements, Director of Fleet Readiness, Director of Air Force Training, Director of Air Requirements 5 (Fighters and Trainers) and A3 Fighter Coordination.

BGen Day commanded 15 Wing, in Moose Jaw, SK, between 2014 and 2016 and was the Combined Air Operations Center Director for US Air Forces, Central Command, at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar in 2019. Other deployments include Kabul, Afghanistan, as part of NATO's International Security Assistance Force in 2010 and Poggio-Renatico, Italy during Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR for a short time in 2011. He has a Bachelor of Science in Honours Mathematics and Physics and a Masters of Defence Studies from RMC, and is a graduate of both the CAF’s Joint Command and Staff Programme as well as the United States Air Force’s Air War College.

In 2020, BGen Day was posted to US Indo-Pacific Command Headquarters in Honolulu, HI, where he assumed the duties of Deputy Director of Operations for International Operations and Engagement.
