Mobilization Assistant, Requirements and Resources (J8)

Brig. Gen. W. Alan Matney

Brig. Gen. W. Alan Matney is Mobilization Assistant to the Director, Requirements and Resources (J8), United States Inda-Pacific Command, Camp Smith, Hawaii. The J8 is the principal advisor to the USINDOPACOM Commander and is his representative to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of Defense on issues and activities relevant to USINDOPACOM future force structure, capabilities, requirements, programs, budget, research, analysis, transformation, and experimentation.

Brig. Gen. Matney began his Air Force career in 1992 as a Distinguished Graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. He spent over nine years on active duty in a variety of assignments as a pilot and personnel officer. In September 2002, Brig. Gen. Matney entered the Air Force Reserve and has served in multiple roles as a strategist and planner. He flew more than 900 hours in KC-10, C-27, T-1, and T-37 aircraft prior to leaving rated service in 1998.

As a civilian, Brig. Gen. Matney has focused academically and professionally on the intersection of religion and foreign policy, working on that topic at senior levels of the U.S. Government. He is a Joint Qualified Officer and has held numerous staff positions in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Joint Staff, and Air Staff, including service as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Prior to his current assignment, he served concurrently as Mobilization Assistant to the Director of Legislative Liaison in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force and as Senior Military Advisor for the Defeat !SIS Task Force in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy at the Pentagon.
