CAMP SMITH, Hawaii (Nov. 20, 2008) – More than 50 servicemembers, the majority of whom were Marines, visited the Republic of Kiribati Wednesday for the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Tarawa, paying tribute to approximately 4,000 Americans who were wounded or killed in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II.

CAMP SMITH, Hawaii (Nov. 20, 2008) -- On Nov. 20, 1943, Marines from Co. K, 3rd Bn., 2nd Marines, began a 76-hour battle on Tarawa Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean that would become the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history up to that time.
