USS HOUSTON, at sea -- (June 22, 2006) The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Houston (SSN 713), currently assigned to Submarine Squadron 15 in Guam, gets a periscope reading on the SS Petersburg (T-AOT) 5075 during the Pacific Command's joint exercise Valiant Shield 2006. With three carrier strike groups working together with land-based U.S. military air and ground forces, Valiant Shield 2006 provides the U.S. a unique opportunity to operate and sustain these forces in a blue-water environment that is very different from other theaters such as the Middle East. Because of the vast distances of the Pacific Ocean, integrated air and seapower is essential for immediate response to any contingency. U.S. Navy Photo.
