Readout of Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., Commander, U.S. Pacific Command Meeting With Japanese Minister of Defense Gen Nakatani at Camp Smith, Hawaii

Today, Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., Commander, United States Pacific Command, met with Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani at Camp Smith, Hawaii, in the Defense Minister’s second visit to U.S. PACOM headquarters in his current role.

In the meeting, the Adm. Harris and Minister Nakatani discussed the continually evolving security environment in the Indo-Asia-Pacific, including the East China Sea and the South China Sea. They discussed issues relevant to both countries and affirmed their determination to conduct maritime operations in accordance with international law.

The two also discussed the current Ballistic Missile Defense posture in the Indo-Asia-Pacific and how the two nations partner to enhance BMD coverage of mutual interests.

Adm. Harris and Minister Nakatani expressed their commitment to a strong alliance and to continuing to build on the relationship in the future.
