Cope North 23: Trilateral integration at Iwo Jima strengthens capabilities
230221-F-HU835-0296.JPG Photo By: (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Ryan Lackey)

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan - U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joshua Tate, 36th Airlift Wing religious affairs specialist who headed security training for the deployed team at Iwo Jima, discusses aircraft security measures with Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force during practice drills with a JMSDF C-130H Hercules during the Cope North 23 exercise, Feb. 21, 2023. Advance teams and aircraft require protection in potentially contested areas that are provided by security specialists, but Agile Combat Employment training with mission partners can enable forces from other areas to supplement defender positions as required, making for a more flexible force that requires less manpower overall to complete the same effort. Airfield security procedures vary from country to country, so cross-training efforts that follow similar methodologies help improve the interoperability of allied forces and provide additional strategic planning options.
