EAST CHINA SEA - USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) ships steam in formation at the conclusion of a bilateral exercise to increase proficiency in basic maritime skills and improve response capabilities, Mar. 29, 2017. Over a three-day period the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group and JMSDF ships conducted multiple maneuvers testing their communications interoperability and ship handling techniques. The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group is on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of U.S. 3rd Fleet. U.S Navy aircraft carrier strike groups have patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific regularly and routinely for more than 70 years.
