Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force, U.S. Marine Corps Continue Partnership

Mellinger was awarded for significantly contributing to increased training opportunities for the JGSDF by advancing co-use of Marine Corps training facilities on Okinawa and expanding III Marine Expeditionary Force efforts to participate in alliance/bilateral exercises. Hotta is the deputy chief of Policy and Programs Division, Ground Staff Office, JGSDF. Iwata is JGSDF chief of staff. Mellinger is III MEF chief of staff.

Task Force Koa Moana Teaches Non-lethal Capabilities in Timor Leste

Araujo is with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, Timor Leste Defense Force. Thompson, from Wyoming, Michigan, is a military police and chief instructor for the non-lethal weapons course with Task Force Koa Moana, originally assigned to Charlie Company, 3rd Law Enforcement Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force.

Timor-Leste Defense Chief Welcomes Pacific Partnership

Charles Williams, Commander, Task Force 73, chats with Komande Jeral Julio Hornay, general commander of the National Police of Timor Leste, before the opening ceremony for Pacific Partnership 2016 at the Timor Leste Ministry of Defense. Deployed in support of Pacific Partnership 2016, Mercy is on its first stop of the 2016 mission. Pacific Partnership has a longstanding history with Timor Leste, having first visited in 2006, and four subsequent times since. Medical, engineering and various other personnel embarked aboard Mercy will work side-by-side with partner nation counterparts, exchanging ideas, building best practices and relationships to ensure preparedness should disaster strike.

U.S. Forces Japan and Japan Air Self-defense Force Work Together

U.S. Air Force NCOs from Kadena Air Base traveled to Gifu AB, Japan, to participate in 10 days of activities with the Japan Air Self Defense Force member during a bilateral exchange held May 17-26, 2016. The 10 day schedule was packed full of activities that proved just how important the culture of trust and respect between the USAF and JASDF is, as well as the warfighting integration and being ready to facilitate deterrence and assist each other in the area of responsibility as needed.

US Pacific Fleet Marks 74th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway

PEARL HARBOR (June 4, 2016) Rear Adm. Paul Becker, special assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence, delivers remarks during a Battle of Midway commemoration ceremony and honored the contribution of Naval Intelligence at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. The island of Midway, located a thousand miles northwest of Honolulu, became the focus of the Japanese fleet's effort to stop U.S. resistance, but U.S. intelligence broke the Japanese naval code and anticipated the surprise attack. The Battle of Midway, which took place June 4-7, 1942, was a decisive victory for the U.S. Navy and is regarded as the turning point of the war in the Pacific.

PACANGEL is a joint and combined humanitarian assistance operation held in various countries several times a year and includes medical, dental, optometry, and engineering support programs and various subject-matter expert exchanges.
