Secretary of State John Kerry's Travel to Burma, Australia, Solomon Islands, and Hawaii

By Jen Psaki

Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Naypyitaw, Burma; Sydney, Australia; Honiara, Solomon Islands; and Honolulu, Hawaii August 8-13, 2014.

On August 9, Secretary Kerry will arrive in Naypyitaw to meet Burmese government leaders and to attend the U.S.-ASEAN, Lower Mekong Initiative, Friends of the Lower Mekong Initiative, ASEAN Regional Forum, and East Asia Summit ministerial meetings. Engaging the region’s multilateral institutions is one of the key aspects of U.S. commitment in Asia to promote peace, stability, and prosperity. The Secretary will also participate in a series of bilateral meetings.

Secretary Kerry will travel to Sydney, Australia, August 11-13, to join U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, and Australian Defense Minister David Johnston for the annual Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN) to advance our longstanding security cooperation and discuss regional and global issues.

On August 13, Secretary Kerry will travel to Honiara, Solomon Islands to meet government leaders and attend wreath laying ceremonies at the Guadalcanal American Memorial and Solomon Scouts and Coastwatchers Memorial. Later that day, he will depart for Honolulu, Hawaii to give remarks at the East-West Center on August 13.
